Enabling LTE on iOS 6 ::by bag.xml
The biggest thing that frustrated me before switching to my iOS 8.4 iPhone 6 was that i was capped to EDGE data speeds since 2021. I live in Germany, and use the Telefonica network and well, they've shut down 3G since basically 2021 which is kinda frustrating because the infrastructure is still here but unused. Literally just shut down. Recently I discovered a way to enable LTE on carriers which didn't support LTE back in 2012/2013. I wish I knew this earlier, and I'd like to share it with you, it's not as hard as people think it is.
Prerequisites
- an iPhone 5, iPad Mini, iPad 4 or any other device that supports LTE and runs on iOS 6.
- The device above MUST, i repeat MUST run iOS 6.0-6.1.2. iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 will not work regardless of forcefully installing CommCenter Patch.
- A Jailbreak
- iFile
- The repository http://beta.leimobile.com/repo/, in which CommCenter Patch is available, or the direct DEB file via this link: https://workupload.com/file/tNQbUKLKK5Q
- A supported SIM card, when using cellular data you should just see "E" or "3G" (just so the symbolic link will be created to directly go to the right bundle of your carrier using iFile)
Proceeding
- Add the repo http://beta.leimobile.com/repo/ to Cydia.
- Navigate into the repository and install the tweak named "CommCenter* patch for iOS 5+"
- With iFile, go to /private/var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundle.bundle/ (which is a shortcut to your current Carrier Bundle)
- Open the file
carrier.plist
with the Property List reader. - Click on the "+" button and add a boolean key called
"Show4GSwitch
then validate. Then, enable this boolean key! - If it exists, erase the folder called "overlay" that is located in /var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles/
- Reboot. Now you need to check in the Cellular settings if the 3G switch has been correctly replaced by the LTE switch.
If you see an "Enable LTE" switch then congratulations, this works for you. Now make sure that your APN settings are specified correctly and you can go ahead and browse through iOS 6 with LTE speeds.
Troubleshooting
If this doesn't work for you or you get "No Service" you can do these 3 steps:
- Enable Airplane Mode for 30-45 seconds. Why so many seconds? Because CommCenter will actually shut itself down to preserve battery life, and when you disable airplane mode it'll restart itself.
- Reset network settings
- Reboot. The 4G switch should be there. It's called "LTE" on iOS 6, but it's just the other name for 4G. Now enable it. If you do not get 4G after enabling it, it's probably because you do not have any compatible antennas around you.
I hope this guide helped you, it certainly helped me and I was quite shocked that it finally worked (I was clueless and tried on iOS 6.1.4). Using iOS 6 with LTE is awesome, it's so fast and does not overheat or anything. Battery life is significantly shorter but that's a given with LTE unfortunately.
